“THIS IS NOT DRILL”

December 7th, 1941, a date which will live in infamy.

Radiogram to military installations.

On December 7, 1941, the U.S. naval base on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, was attacked by Japan. In less than 2 hours, the U.S. Pacific Fleet was devastated, and more than 3,500 Americans were either killed or wounded. The incident triggered a mobilization for war. On December 8, the United States declared war against Japan; on December 11, Germany and Italy declared war against the United States.

This small, short document symbolizes and foreshadows the events and world climate that would define the last half of the twentieth century.

Ron Paul fact

Ron Paul Ron Paul is one of the more under-reported stories of the Republican pre-primary season. The Texas Congressman has won more straw polls than any other GOP candidate. In fact, Ron Paul has won more straw polls than Mitt Romney, Rick Perry and Michelle Bachmann combined.

He may not be a very good off-the-cuff speaker, but watch this video and tell me if you think he couldn’t speak well for the United States as President.

America isn’t the only country with drones

I think the general public might be a bit naive when they think of our mighty military. We might be able to kick some serious ass, we aren’t the only ones harnessing some dangerous technology. Today, more than 50 countries are using or developing unmanned aerial vehicles, or “Drones.” Here are a couple that make me nervous. See a more complete list here. (via Wired)

Why Pennies Are Economically Inefficient and Should Be Abolished

This place used to be called Zin's and is located at 5467 South 28th Ave. in Minneapolis

I used to torture the poor guy that ran Zin’s in South Minneapolis as a kid by emptying my grimy pennies on his counter and methodically buying penny candy.  Those days are over for kids now for more reasons than one. Now, people are calling for the death of the penny. Too bad. I got my first lessons in economics using pennies.

C.G.P. Grey makes the case for “why Pennies are economically inefficient and should be abolished.” He does make some good points.

A list of companies too chickenshit to use the word “Christmas”

The American Family Association provided a list of companies that do and do not use the word “Christmas” in their advertising or promotions this time of year. If you are interested in seeing how they determined this, then click here.

I am indifferent on this topic because I’m pretty sure Jesus Christ doesn’t care about Black Friday. I think a company should use whatever word they want. However, I don’t think retailers should be letting the political correctness crazies out there push them around either. Use whatever word (Christmas, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Holiday) is going to make your company wheel barrows full of money and ignore the idiots that tell you how to run your business.

Who was “The Umbrella Man”?

The Umbrella Man

Willis Slide 1964 The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza

Errol Morris makes documentary films. His latest effort only runs 6 minutes and explores a very odd mystery regarding the Kennedy assassination. In the short, Morris interviews Josiah “Tink” Thompson, a former philosophy professor and expert on the JFK assassination. The topic is “The Umbrella Man,” a mysterious character who appears in the Zapruder film of the shooting.

Why is this lone man holding a large black umbrella on a beautiful sunny day? And isn’t it a little suspicious that the shooting starts right as the presidential motorcade passes the mysterious man?

Who was “The Umbrella Man”? Watch the video here.

JFK assassination conspiracy stuff

It amazes me that more and more info is still coming to light regarding the 1963 JFK assassination.

Was it Oswald? Was it the CIA? Did the Warren Commission cover things up? What about the witnesses in the Book Depository? Did the fatal gunshot came from a “grassy knoll” on Dealey Plaza? I don’t have the time and energy to get into it all here, but there is a lot of great new discussion taking place on these very old questions.

Most feel there is more to this story, and I can’t say that I blame them. If it was a slam dunk case with one shooter (Lee Harvey Oswald), then why did the Government decide to seal the assassination records for 75 years (to 2039)?

No wonder conspiracy theories abound.

Political musings

Taylor Garrett is a cast member of the gay reality TV show “A-List Dallas”

If you are gay, GLAAD and the left will defend you. Not if you are a Republican though. Read this story about how reality TV show star Taylor Garrett gets a beat down and vandalized because he’s a gay conservative associated with commentator Ann Coulter.

Jon Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen

The Government Accountability Office (GAO) identified several celebrities receiving farm subsidies whose professions had nothing to do with farming or agriculture. Did you know Jon Bon Jovi paid property taxes of only $100 last year on his extensive real estate holdings in New Jersey that he uses to raise bees? He’s not alone. Bruce Springsteen, Ted Turner, Quincy Jones and others are collecting too. Is it right? I don’t know, but it does make me cringe a bit. I won’t fault people (even celebrities) for taking advantage of loopholes that are in place. If we as a society think it’s wrong, then we need to change the laws I guess. See story.

Jay-Z
Rapper Jay-Z loves the Occupy Wall Street movement and is making some good money off a new line of Rocawear branded OWS T-shirts (see story). At this time, he has not made an official commitment to monetarily support the movement. I think it’s great that he is demonstrating entreprenurial skills. Good for him.

leonardo-dicaprio-J-EdgarAnyone else tired of seeing Leo take on these “older” roles? He has such a baby face, I can’t usually take him seriously when he plays really mature roles. I don’t know if I’ll see the new Hoover movie because of this. Plus, I don’t think I can look past that terrible make-up job. I do like Eastwood though. Hmmm, what to do?
