JSOC: The President’s Ace in the hole
The team of US Special Operations Forces who killed Osama bin Laden in a pre-dawn raid on a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, were led by elite Navy SEALS from the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC, pronounced: JAY-sock). They basically serve as the president’s secret army, planning and executing the most dangerous, highly classified missions of the United States military. Somali pirates killing? Nabbing Saddam Hussein? Black Hawk Down? JSOC was involved in all of them.
The Command: Deep Inside the President’s Secret Army by Marc Ambinder and D.B. Grady is a new book that goes deep inside JSOC and gives us a look at why our military is badass. It is now available at Amazon.

In Vince Flynn’s latest page-turner, the stakes are higher than they’ve ever been as Mitch Rapp embarks on the journey that will turn him into America’s most deadly asset. Flynn is known for delivering shockingly realistic situations in his political thriller / assassin books. Every detail and protocol appears to be extensively researched and accurate. Something us mystery/espionage fans appreciate.

J. Edgar Hoover gave Shirley Temple a fountain pen that emitted tear gas
Shirley Temple–Hollywood’s most famous child star–could not be protected from such real-life intrusions as kidnap and extortion attempts, death threats and an attempted seduction by a Hollywood producer when she was only 12 years old. The threats weren’t reported at the time, she said, for fear that they would stimulate more threats.
The FBI was called in numerous times to investigate these death and extortion threats against her. She and J Edgar Hoover became friends through it all. In 1949, J. Edgar Hoover gave Shirley Temple a strange FBI souvenir– a fountain pen that emitted tear gas.
