The Great Northeast Blackout

The Great Northeast BlackoutThe Great Northeast Blackout of 1965 happened on this day, with nine states, as well as two provinces of Canada, hit by a series of power failures that lasted up to 13 hours. In New York City, 800,000 people were caught in the subways, when the blackout struck at rush hour. Though the cause was blamed on human error, many UFO sightings occurred the same night over the area, suggesting to some that their presence was connected to the blackout. (via Coast to Coast Am)

How Adriana Lima prepares for a Victoria’s Secret fashion show

Most models would have you believe they eat whatever they like – “I eat burgers and French fries!” they protest, as if they fall out of bed every day looking like a magazine advertisement. Industry people know that’s not true, and so does supermodel Adriana Lima. Too bad most women don’t seem to understand these models are freaks of nature.

Adriana Lima’s fashion show preparation starts weeks in advance. Other than working out twice a day, here’s some other things she does to prepare.

She sees a nutritionist, who has measured her body’s muscle mass, fat ratio and levels of water retention. He prescribes protein shakes, vitamins and supplements to keep Lima’s energy levels up during this training period. Lima drinks a gallon of water a day. For nine days before the show, she will drink only protein shakes – “no solids”. The concoctions include powdered egg. Two days before the show, she will abstain from the daily gallon of water, and “just drink normally”. Then, 12 hours before the show, she will stop drinking entirely.

“No liquids at all so you dry out, sometimes you can lose up to eight pounds just from that,” she says.

How to scare your boyfriend

Cruel. I would have reacted this way too. But in my video, the camera would have cut to me on the floor being worked on by paramedics and a defibrillator.

Bill Smith gets his walking papers

Terry Ryan is returning to the role of Twins GM, the team announced today. Ryan, who has an interim tag on his title this time, replaces Bill Smith. Said owner Jim Pohlad in a statement:

Here is a timeline of terrible moves made by Mr. Smith. Welcome back Terry Ryan. These trades reposted from smithysports.

2007
November 28th – Twins trade starting pitcher Matt Garza , starting shortstop Jason Bartlett and some no name minor league pitcher who has yet to make it to the Big Leagues for Outfielder Delmon Young and in-fielder Brendan Harris.

2008
January 29th – Trade starting pitcher and Cy Young award winning to the Mets for Center Fielder Carlos Gomez and a bunch of no name prospects that are closer to making the Big leagues than Paris Hilton is to practicing abstinence. This is one of the worst trades ever, especially when you consider the Twins could have traded Johan to the Red Sox for Jacoby Ellsburry and some prospects. Bill Smith should be getting more flak for this move than Kahn has for any of his moves
February 12th – Signed Livan Hernandez to a one year deal. This was the first of many moves by Smith making us a team that gets knocked out of the first round.
December 11th – agreed to terms with Nick Punto on a two-year club option.

2009
July 31st – Get Orlando Cabrera for less than half season to make the playoffs and then quickly get ousted in the first round again. We then let him go.
August 28th – traded pitcher Phil Humber for Jon Rauch.
November 6th – traded CF Carlos Gomez to Brewers for SS JJ Hardy, who due to injuries in his first season with the Twins, understandably, played poorly. So what do we do? Get rid and let him go to Orioles where he now has 23 Home runs and batting average of .270. Really Bill Smith?

2010
July 29th – We trade catcher Wilson Ramos for closer Matt Capps.
December 17th – Signed Japanese baseball player Tsuyoshi Nishioka to a three-year contract worth 10 million dollars. But when you consider the Twins paid Nishioka 5 million dollars just to negotiate with they are ending up paying this guy 15 million dollars.

2011
August 15th – Twins trade Delmon Young to the Tigers for two no name, no good minor league pitchers.

How an ad student got hired at an elite agency

Hey, Whipple, Squeeze ThisThis story appears in Luke Sullivan’s Hey Whipple, Squeeze This: A Guide to Creating Great Advertising:

An aspiring ad student wants to get a job at one of the elite ad agencies. But interviews there are hard to get.

He cuts a picture of the agency’s creative director from a trade magazine, mounts it on a fake driver’s license, and laminates it perfectly. He tucks the fake ID into an old, tattered wallet and then puts small copies of his best student work into the photo holders.

Here’s the cool part.

He visits the agency, asks to use the bathroom, and then abandons the wallet on the sink counter.

The wallet’s “returned” to the desk of the creative director, and the kid’s hired.
