Twins position players who have pitched

Michael Cuddyer moved from right field to the mound to pitch the eighth for the Twins last night. Cuddyer gave up a double to Napoli, a bloop single to Mitch Moreland, and walked Kinsler with one out to load the bases. He did get out of the inning after retiring Elvis Andrus on a fly ball and David Murphy on a pop-up for a scoreless inning.

The last Twins position player to pitch was outfielder John Moses against California on July 31, 1990. Moses actually pitched twice in 1990, each time in a loss.

Twins position players who pitched: Julio Becquer (10 Sept 1961), César Tovar, Dan Gladden (27 June 1988 and 7 May 1989, both Fred Toliver losses), John Moses, and now Cuddyer.

The day Bob Dylan “went electric”

Bob Dylan Newport Folk Festival
On this date in 1965, a seminal event in rock and roll history took place when Bob Dylan “went electric” during his infamous performance at the Newport Folk Festival. A hero to the folk music community, Dylan’s switch to electric guitar was seen as the ultimate act of betrayal by many in the audience, who booed the performance. Urban legend has it that event organizer Pete Seeger was so upset by the act that he threatened to cut the wires to the stage with an axe.

Update 7/17/2012: There is a controversy regarding the whereabouts of this electric Fender guitar to this day. Rumor has it the guitar was left behind on a plane, but a new episode of ‘History Detectives’ says that it is in the possession of a New Jersey family. Estimated worth of the instrument: $300,000 to $500,000.

Watch interviews about it here. Starts at 4:19.

Minnesota team wins Red Bull’s Creation event

Red Bull’s annual Creation event involved 16 teams from across the country who came together for three days of high stakes innovation with the city as their playground. A secret warehouse in Brooklyn full of tools, materials and hardware hackers were given the task of building a creation designed to move the weight of a person (100lbs) from point A to point B without using any fossil fuels. They had 3 days. The winning team is named 1.21 Jigawatts, and they are from Minneapolis.

They created a massive hamster wheel, wired into a mobile network, given its own phone number that could somehow receive up to 60,000 one-word text messages at a time. Once it received the text message, the hamster wheel would actually roll and perfectly print the word out along the ground. Grand prize – $5k. Pretty cool huh?

Twins sign paleontologist from South Dakota

Twins sign paleontologist from South Dakota

Despite no high school or college playing experience, the Twins were impressed with a 22 year-old paleontologist from South Dakota who tried out at a camp in Fort Myers, Fla. He signed for a $500 bonus and has begun his pro career with the Twins’ rookie league team in the Gulf Coast League as a pitcher.

He apparently has good speed (fastball clocked at 88-90 mph) and movement on his pitches.

John Krogstad high school didn’t have a team and he didn’t attend college. He has been working in paleontology until now digging up dinosaur fossils. So what about his old job? “The dinosaur bones are always going to be there,” said Krogstad.

Helicopter seeds are pure evil

Helicopter seeds are pure evil. They get in your gutters, rock gardens, grass, planters, etc and are a pain to clean up. If you don’t clean them up, small maple trees will start growing out of gutters, gardens, and plant boxes. Holy nightmare. Mother nature can be cruel. If you have a silver maple in your yard, you understand my pain. Can someone please invent something to combat this?
