The best of Boogaard

Minnesota hockey fans were sad to learn that Derek Boogaard died over the weekend. He brought passion and grit to the sport, and he will not be forgotten. R.I.P. Boogie Man. Here is a nice compilation of video of Derek doing what he did best…destroying people on the ice.

Goodbye Mr. Killebrew

I wasn’t alive when Harmon Killebrew played baseball. I know what he meant to the game and to Twins fans across Minnesota though. Today the Minnesota Twins announced Twins great Harmon Killebrew has entered hospice care.

**UPDATE 5/17: Mr. Killebrew has died of cancer at the age of 74. So sad…

“I am very comfortable taking this next step and experiencing the compassionate care that hospice provides,” said Killebrew. “I am comforted by the fact that I am surrounded by my family and friends. I thank you for the outpouring of concern, prayers and encouragement that you have shown me. I look forward to spending my final days in comfort and peace with Nita by my side.”

May God be with you and bless you Mr. Killebrew.

Happy 70th Birthday, Bob!

Minnesotans love to claim Dylan as one of their own. He is, after all, one of our most successful exports. Anyway, Bob Dylan turns 70 years old on May 24th. Rolling Stone has a nice write-up in honor of Dylan and his music. Check it out here.

Now I have to try to explain to my mother what a Hipster is

Minnesota 'Most Hipster State in the U.S.'Minnesota was just declared the ‘Most Hipster State in the U.S.’ Here’s why:

Our obsessive bike culture
Our thriving music scene/legacy
Our love of lumberjack chic/flannel
Our abundant farmers’ markets
Our thriving theater scene

BuzzFeed conducted the study based on “research” they have gathered.

Thanks BuzzFeed. Now I have to try to explain to my mother what a Hipster is.

My thoughts on the winning criteria:
Bicycle enthusiasts in this state are a pain in the ass.
The local music scene here is has sucked since about 1998. I’m sorry Tapes ‘n Tapes, you’re just not that good.
Flannel is practical here; not a fashion statement. Paul Bunyan is not interested in going green. He destroys trees for a living!
Farmers markets are money-making machines that do nothing for the environment. Do you know what your grandparents called organic food? They called it “food.”
Since when are rich people at the Chanhassen Dinner Theater hipsters?

Spring has sprung on the Dutch countryside

Spring has sprung on the Dutch countryside. The vibrant blues, reds, pinks and yellows sprawl as far as the eye can see in Lisse, western Netherlands, where farmers hope to make huge profits selling them to florists and supermarkets around the world. The fields can hold over 60 million tulips at any one time. Today Holland produces more than nine billion bulbs every year, of which two thirds are exported overseas (mainly to the U.S. and Germany).

Daniel McKeague, 36, a father of three from Hugo, Minn., beat out 12,500 other contestants to replace actor Gilbert Gottfried and become the new voice of the reinsurance company’s duck mascot. Aflac Chief Marketing Officer Michael Zuna says the company and its longtime advertising agency, The Kaplan Thaler Group, first winnowed the contestants to a short list of about 50, which they cut to 8 and finally to 3 — none of them celebrities. The bicycle double standard

Minneapolis is consistently ranked as one of the best cities for bicycle riding. Now that the weather is getting warmer, people like me who prefer to drive to work will soon experience the double standard that is bike riding in Minnesota.

R.I.P. Porky’s – Closing on Sunday

Source: Mark Kolkmann

I was very sad to hear the news about Porky’s in St. Paul closing it’s doors. The neighborhood drive-in rode the crusin’ craze of the 1950’s in St. Paul and was  a place to show off your classic car while eating famous onion rings. Everyone who lives in Minnesota has a story about this place.

Even though the owners said business was good, the tax hikes and newly planned construction of the Central Corridor light-rail line were factors in closing.

Porky’s will close their doors this Sunday. Thanks a lot light-rail people. I hope your happy.

What will you miss about Porky’s?
