The only jacket I ever wanted as an 80s child

This is the only jacket I ever wanted to own as a boy during the 1980s. I never did convince my mother to buy me one. I wonder what they cost back then?

For his 1982 teen gang video “Beat It,” the Jackson picked a casually cool outfit that would inspire millions to wear zipper-accented red leather jackets in a decade-defining look for the ’80s. I guess Amazon sells this jacket for adults and kids.

Freak Streets

Mental Floss highlighted something we have all wondered about. How do some street names get approved? A few years ago, in a poll sponsored by Mitsubishi, some of the best/worst names were honored, including Psycho Path (Traverse City, MI), Divorce Court (Heather Highlands, PA), and the Houston intersection of Clinton and Fidelity. If you want to add a street you think has a crazy name, or see what has already been submitted in your town, click on over to FreakStreets.com. What are some poorly named streets in Minnesota?

Why the My FedEx Rewards program isn’t worth it

I sell things on eBay throughout the year. As a seller I have lots of options to choose from when it comes to shipping. Typically, if I have a larger or heavier item to ship I will use FedEx over the U.S. Post office because the price is usually lower for my customers.

Awhile back, I enrolled in the My FedEx Rewards program offered through FedEx. I was excited about the opportunity to earn points and then claim them for things like gift cards to Target or Amazon.com. I figured that I give my business to FedEx to ship my bulkier items rather than UPS or the U.S. Post Office and star earning points. I chose FedEx over the competition for more than a year spending hundreds of dollars in shipping costs to exclusively use FedEx and earn those points.

I guess it was all for nothing. They informed me that my FedEx rewards points were going to start expiring if I didn’t start cashing them in on their “rewards.” I looked at their catalog and found I wasn’t eligible for any gift cards and could only choose between the following trade show crap shown below.

Why the My FedEx Rewards program isn't worth it

The crap I was entitled to after spending hundreds of dollars on shipping with FedEx. THANKS FEDEX!!!!

Since I didn’t need another water bottle or have any interest in a FedEx keychain, I sat back and watched more than 3,000 of my hard-earned FedEx points expire. Another 700 are set to expire before the end of the year. I don’t ship enough to ever make this up, so what’s the point. Why did they ever let me in their program in the first place knowing my shipping history? Why give a loyal customer a reward only to take it away because they aren’t shopping with you enough?

I should have known that points expired. I’m sure I read somewhere that they did when I signed up. So don’t worry FedEx, I know it’s my fault. You don’t really want to reward your small customers anyway. I get it. I’ll take my lumps and see myself out of your “rewards program.”

If you are an occasional eBay seller and use FedEx to ship, think twice about signing up for their “rewards program.” It is nearly impossible to save up enough points for anything good unless you are shipping A TON of items. You’re likely to see points expire before being able to use them on anything someone would actually want. Instead, shop UPS and the post office for a better rate and pocket the savings.

By the way, here are some good deals on shipping supplies if you need them.

The Elf Tree in Minneapolis

If you haven’t seen the Elf Tree in Minneapolis, then you should get out and take a walk. It’s located at Lake Harriet. Have a pressing question you need an anser to? Need advice? Maybe you miss the lost art of a written letter. No email here folks. Just an Elf that answers all letters left for him. And yes, it’s a real elf.

An open letter to small businesses trying to pick a typeface

I hate the font Copperplate Gothic. I am not alone. Here are some examples of its overuse in society. CPG and Comic Sans need to ride off into the sunset.

An open letter to small businesses trying to pick a typeface. Please DON'T use this font. Ever.

5. Facebook is kinda becoming terrifying I think. I have seen it ruin relationships. I have seen  updates from people that make them look bad. I have “friends” that have completely dropped any form of human interaction and insist to only be communicated with via Facebook.  I’m not saying Facebook is all bad. A lot of it is fun. I just wonder what the long-term ramifications of it will be. Here are some things about Facebook that should scare you:

6. Here is some good insight on the recession, and why it is here to stay. Factories were at the center of the industrial age. That age is now over due to new technology and efficiency that does everything faster, cheaper, and smarter. If you want to save American jobs by creating more factories, you can’t. We don’t need those jobs anymore. Seth Godin says “Job creation is a false idol,” and explains why here.
