Monday Music Rewind: Ginuwine – Pony

This morning on twitter, the trending topic was #throwbacksongs. Scrolling through, I noticed most of them were hip-hop. It reminded me of the hit “Pony” from Ginuwine. In case you are wondering, the song isn’t about a Pony. The song must have helped in the bedroom too. He has 8 children.

Pony was released as a single from his first LP, Ginuwine…The Bachelor, in 1996. Watch the video below. Buy the song here.

The band Far has a nice rock cover of this song too.

Monday Music Rewind: Grant Lee Buffalo

Grant Lee BuffaloOne of the most under-appreciated bands of the 90s has to be Grant Lee Buffalo. Grant Lee Buffalo was a rock band based in Los Angeles, California, consisting of Grant-Lee Phillips (vocals and guitar), Paul Kimble (bass) and Joey Peters (drums).

My favorite song from the group is “Mockingbirds” from the Mighty Joe Moon album released in (1994).

They toured with major bands during the 90s including R.E.M., Pearl Jam, the Smashing Pumpkins, and The Cranberries.

The band has parted ways, but Grant-Lee Phillips continues a solo career. Paul Kimble talks about how the music industry and label prevented their sound from hitting the airwaves. A lot of thoughtful modern rock suffered under similar circumstances. It marked the beginning of the end for many.

Vince Flynn’s Kill Shot chronicles the rise of a CIA Superagent

Buy Vince Flynn Kill Shot book

In Vince Flynn’s latest page-turner, the stakes are higher than they’ve ever been as Mitch Rapp embarks on the journey that will turn him into America’s most deadly asset. Flynn is known for delivering shockingly realistic situations in his political thriller / assassin books. Every detail and protocol appears to be extensively researched and accurate. Something us mystery/espionage fans appreciate.

His latest book is called Kill Shot. It is hitting stands today. The book is actually a prequel to his later books and follows the story of how Mitch Rapp became the CIA’s superagent.

Exerpt from Simon and Schuster: In the year since the CIA trained and then unleashed him, Mitch Rapp has been steadily working his way through a list of men, bullet by bullet. With each swift and untraceable kill, the tangled network of monsters responsible for the slaughter of 270 civilians in the Pan Am Lockerbie attack become increasingly aware that someone is hunting them. Rapp is given his next target, and finds the man asleep in his bed in Paris. In the split second it takes the bullet to leave Rapp’s silenced pistol, the trap is sprung and he finds himself in the fight of his life.

Monday Music Rewind: School of Fish

School of Fish was an alternative rock band which formed in 1989 and disbanded in 1994. Their self-titled debut was released in March 1991, followed by their first single, “Three Strange Days.” You can buy it here.

This song is timeless to me and brings me back to a perfect time of my youth.

I only recently learned that singer Josh Clayton-Felt died on January 19, 2000 at 32 of testicular cancer. Sad.

Guitarist Michael Ward went on to play with John Hiatt and eventually became a member of The Wallflowers.

Enjoy the trip back to 1991.
