Navy SEAL writes book about the raid that killed Osama bin Laden

White House Situation Room, May 1, 2011 (Pete Souza/White House)

White House Situation Room, May 1, 2011 (Pete Souza/White House)

A Navy SEAL used the pseudonym Mark Owen to write an upcoming book on the raid that killed Osama bin Laden. The book is called “No Easy Day: The Firsthand Account of the Mission That Killed Osama bin Laden.” Pre-order here.

It gets released on Sept. 11th.

The SEAL, who Fox News surprisingly outed, is likely gonna face another tough mission – avoiding legal trouble. The Pentagon has not vetted the account or authorized the book.

Not completely sure how I feel about this. It feels kinda wrong for a SEAL to write a book and profit from the mission while the others who were with him that night gain nothing. They should have written it together or not at all.

Still, I will probably buy this book.

Want to fake kill Osama bin Laden?

Bin Laden killed repeatedly in Twin Cities suburb game

Bin Laden killed repeatedly in Twin Cities suburb game

In St. Paul, Minnesota, a former Navy Seal, Larry Yatch, is offering people who fantasize about killing other people a chance to participate in a reenactment of the Seal raid that executed Osama bin Laden in a Pakistani compound last year.

This isn’t a real military operation. It’s a high-end role-playing game. People pay $325 to re-enact the bin Laden raid. Although the mission is fake, Yatch, Sealed Mindset’s president, is a real Navy SEALs vet. He opened the 10,000-square-foot studio with his wife Anne in April. So far, 137 people have signed up to pretend to kill a man wearing a white robe and a fake beard.

They should try to capture him alive, unless he starts shooting back. “If he presents a lethal threat, take him out,” Yatch instructed. “I don’t want to have to write a letter to any of your parents, okay?”

The company offers 73 defense classes each month and “live scenario trainings” designed to mimic actual threats. Yatch has set up fake kidnappings, fake carjackings, and even a fake shooting by a disgruntled employee.

‘Zero Dark Thirty’- Movie Trailer about Bin Laden Mission

Kathryn Bigelow’s Bin Laden Thriller Titled ‘Zero Dark Thirty’

American military will kick your s*%$# in and then make a movie about it.

Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty is a new military film about the US Navy SEAL Team 6 hunt for Osama bin Laden and the mission that eventually caught and killed him. This is Bigelow’s follow-up to The Hurt Locker and the project has been shrouded in complete secrecy while shooting this year. There’s not a lot of good looks at the cast in this teaser, but it does certainly set the tone. Mark Strong, Kyle Chandler, Jessica Chastain and brothers Nash & Joel Edgerton star in this movie that hits theaters on 12/19.

Military “training exercise” has town on edge

Excerpt from: This is odd and a bit suspicious to me. This is a photo showing fully armed U.S. National Guard troops patrolling a quiet residential street in Crookston, Minnesota. This underscores concerns that Americans are being conditioned to accept the gradual imposition of martial law.

Although the photo is undated, Guard troops from the local Crookston Armory routinely take part in off-base exercises which train the local population to accept the sight of armed soldiers patrolling their neighborhoods as normal.

One such exercise in February 2011 dubbed “Urban Operations Training” involved military Humvees and 27 armed soldiers conducting a drill around the Bridge Street area of Crookston.

According to “Maggie,” the woman who took the photograph, when she started taking pictures of the troops one of them told her, “Just training Ma’am. Joining up with another patrol at the rally point.”

When Maggie asked why they were training on the streets of a quiet residential area, a younger soldier responded, “To be honest ma’am, I don’t know.”

Members of the same Guard unit shown on the photograph – Minnesota National Guard, Unit 2-136 CAB / B Company – have been deployed to Iraq where their duties would potentially have included rounding up alleged insurgents and taking them to prison camps, a frightening prospect given that the recently passed National Defense Authorization Act allows for American citizens to be similarly kidnapped and detained without trial.

JSOC: The President’s Ace in the hole

The team of US Special Operations Forces who killed Osama bin Laden in a pre-dawn raid on a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, were led by elite Navy SEALS from the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC, pronounced: JAY-sock). They basically serve as the president’s secret army, planning and executing the most dangerous, highly classified missions of the United States military. Somali pirates killing? Nabbing Saddam Hussein? Black Hawk Down? JSOC was involved in all of them.

The Command: Deep Inside the President’s Secret Army by Marc Ambinder and D.B. Grady is a new book that goes deep inside JSOC and gives us a look at why our military is badass. It is now available at Amazon.
JSCO book

mental_floss has a great article here on 10 Things You Didn’t Know About the President’s Secret Army. Here’s a few:

  • JSOC can reconstruct documents that have been burned.
  • The aircraft used in the Bin Laden raid were from Area 51.
  • There is a JSOC base in a major European airport.
  • When you hear “Delta Force” or “SEAL Team Six,” they’re talking about JSOC.

Why close quarters combat with the South Korean military is a bad idea

Here is a video of South Korea’s military displaying some unorthodox forms of fighting. I suppose being able to break concrete blocks with your head would come in handy if you ran out of ammo.

America isn’t the only country with drones

I think the general public might be a bit naive when they think of our mighty military. We might be able to kick some serious ass, we aren’t the only ones harnessing some dangerous technology. Today, more than 50 countries are using or developing unmanned aerial vehicles, or “Drones.” Here are a couple that make me nervous. See a more complete list here. (via Wired)
