Creating the sensation of textures

E-Sense

E-Sense is a new touch interface that simulates the sensation of textures and other touch feedback on virtually any surface including touchscreens.  It was created by Finnish tech company Senseg. The core of the technology is the “tixel,” or tactile pixel, a special surface that emits a weak electrical field. When skin is exposed to the electrical field, all manner of textures and sensations can be simulated–sticky or smooth surfaces, even clicks or vibration. This could be used to produce the sensation of touching sand, silk, or water.

With accuracy down to the level of individual tixels, the technology allows for exceptional control of the produced sensation. Tactile feedback can be localized to individual areas enabling multi-touch user experiences. Since it is easily scalable to small and large surfaces with ultra-thin implementation, Senseg E-Sense can be applied to virtually any surface including the device’s cover bringing a new dimension of user experience.

Think of the uses. Awesome.

Arsenic fun facts

poison
Reposted from Stiched Together in a Preserved Jar
Many murderers who employ poison as their weapon of choice favor arsenic, but it’s not that perfect a means to murder. For one, you can’t put arsenic in a cold beverage without it being visable – the white powder will float on top. If the poisoner uses a hot beverage, the poison will dissolve very well, but when the beverage cools, it will float to the top as visable sediment. If the beverage has milk in it, such as hot tea, coffee, or cocoa, the arsenic will curdle the milk. Arsenic is also unreliable as a killer. While there have been cases of some people dying after receiving an infinitesimal amount, such as two grams, one woman who atttempted suicide took 230 grams and her only complaint was indigestion for three days.

If foul play is suspected when someone dies, it is a fairly easy procedure for the medical examiner to determine if someone has been poisoned with arsenic. Residue will linger indefinitely in fingernails, bones, and other parts of the body. In terms of a victim detecting it when it is used on them as a murder weapon, arsenic is virtually tasteless and a very small dose can cause death. It is also possible to give arsenic to someone in small doses over a period of time – it will build up in the body and eventually cause death. The person will get sicker and sicker as the arsenic akes effect, and the symptoms appear to be any of a number of nonlethal, everyday maladies. Arsenic first came into existence in the eight century, and for the next several centuries it was not able to be detected – imagine how many victims it may have claimed during this time that we will never know about.

The record for World’s Largest Hamburger was broken at the Alameda County Fair in Pleasanton, CA recently.

Here are the specs:
777 lbs.
5 feet in diameter
3 feet thick

The total weight of the burger included a 272lb bun, 50lbs of lettuce, 12lbs of pickles and 50lbs of onions, not to mention gallons of ketchup and mayonnaise.

This world record burger contained an estimated 1.4 million calories. Too bad it didn’t include bacon.

Twins sign paleontologist from South Dakota

Despite no high school or college playing experience, the Twins were impressed with a 22 year-old paleontologist from South Dakota who tried out at a camp in Fort Myers, Fla. He signed for a $500 bonus and has begun his pro career with the Twins’ rookie league team in the Gulf Coast League as a pitcher.

He apparently has good speed (fastball clocked at 88-90 mph) and movement on his pitches.

John Krogstad high school didn’t have a team and he didn’t attend college. He has been working in paleontology until now digging up dinosaur fossils. So what about his old job? “The dinosaur bones are always going to be there,” said Krogstad.
