Warning: Graphic Video of Walter Scott shooting

The following contains unedited, graphic footage of the April 4, 2015, shooting of Walter Scott by North Charleston Patrolman 1st Class Michael Thomas Slager taken by an anonymous bystander. Viewer discretion advised.

Footage like this is very rare. The video shows Scott, who was unarmed and fleeing, was shot in the back by Slager from a distance of at least 15 feet. After Scott was fatally shot, the video appears to capture Slager planting an object next to Scott. This officer has been charged with murder in a state with the death penalty. It does make me wonder how often we don’t see the true story in officer involved shootings. This victim showed ZERO threat to the officer or the public and his murder was senseless.

Police Need Help Finding This Missing U of MN Student

Minneapolis Police need your help to find a missing University of Minnesota student. Jennifer Houle, 22, was last seen between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. this past Friday at Blarney Pub and Grill in Dinkytown. Police say her purse was found three blocks away on the 1100 block of 4th Street Southeast at about 3 a.m.

Houle, from Stillwater, is 5 feet 5 inches tall, weighs about 140 pounds and has long blond hair. She was last seen wearing a black leather jacket, green blouse, black leggings and black boots.

She is a senior studying business at the Carlson School of Management, and is set to graduate this spring. Houle is also a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority, which is located about three blocks away from Blarney Pub and about a block away from where her purse was found.

Minneapolis Police spokesman John Elder said investigators were working on several theories. He said that cutting off contact after an evening out with friends was not consistent with Houle’s typical behavior.

According to Houle’s Facebook account, she also planned to attend a Women in Business Gala at the McNamara Alumni Center on Thursday, an event that was scheduled to run from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Anyone with information is urged to call 911, the Minneapolis Police tipline at 612-692-TIPS (8477), or send a text to 847 411 (tip 411) then enter MPD and the tip.

BREAKING 3/30/2015: Minneapolis police are now saying video evidence was located that indicates Ms. Houle “entered the river from the 10th Avenue Bridge” on Friday morning and was alone when she went over the bridge and into the water. No body has been recovered. Authorities did not call this a suicide or an accident.

Rice bowl with a side of NOPE!

The cuttlefish in the video — part of a seafood dish named odori-don — is actually no longer living. When the sodium in soy sauce is absorbed into the creature’s body, it triggers muscle spasms that appear to make the squid dance.

Incidentally, it makes humans like me fall from their chairs and vomit.

Woman’s baby cut from womb while responding to Craigslist ad

Dynel Catrece Lane, 34

What in the actual F is the matter with people?

A 26-year-old Longmont woman who was seven months pregnant showed up at a home Wednesday to buy baby clothes she’d seen in a Craigslist post.

What police say happened then is horrific: The 34-year-old woman named Dynel Catrece who lives at the home, in the 1600 block of Green Place in Longmont, CO stabbed the pregnant woman and “removed” her baby.

The baby did not survive.

Speaking to the Longmont Times-Call, the Boulder County District Attorney Stanley Garnett described Colorado laws involving crimes against an unborn child as “complicated.”

“In most circumstances, if a child was not actually born alive, then homicide charges are not possible,” Garnett told the newspaper, adding that charges would not need to be filed until next week.

It’s likely the most serious charge that Lane would face may be attempted first-degree murder, a class two felony punishable by 16 to 48 years in prison.

If you’ve always dreamed about giving up your 9-to-5 job to own a bed and breakfast, here is your chance

Center Lovell Inn,

Posted from Mental Floss: If you’ve always hoped to give up your 9-to-5 job to move to Maine to operate a historic bed and breakfast–one that sits on 12 acres and has scenic views of Kezar Lake and the White Mountains–then the Center Lovell Inn, built in 1805, could be your dream come true. All you need to make it yours is $125, a postage stamp, and the best 200-word essay around.

In 1993, then-owners of the Inn, Bil and Susie Mosca, held an essay contest (entry fee: $100) to find a successor. They chose Janice Sage, who had been managing a 50,000-square-foot restaurant in Maryland before winning ownership of the Inn. But after more than two decades of managing the bed and breakfast, Sage, now 68, is ready to retire. And she’s planning her own essay contest to find the Inn’s new owner.

“There’s a lot of very talented people in the restaurant business who would like to have their own place but can’t afford it,” Sage told the Press Herald. “This is a way for them to have the opportunity to try.” The contest has already been deemed legal in Maine because the essay component makes it a matter of skill and not luck. Sage hopes to receive at least 7500 entries, which would earn her the $900,000 that local real estate agents suggested she list the Inn for–although unlike the Moscas before her, Sage has not promised to stop collecting entrants after she hits that amount.

“If I get more entries, all the better,” she said.

To apply, aspiring Inn-owners (18 years of age and older) can send a 200-or-less-word essay on the topic of why they’re the right fit, as well as a check for $125, to the Center Lovell Inn postmarked by May 7 (you can read the full instructions here). Sage will narrow down the applicants to a top 20 and from there, two anonymous judges will pick the new owner of the Inn. If you apply, be sure you’re ready to dive headfirst into ownership–Sage is hoping to announce a successor on May 21st.

The Moscas are not involved in the contest this time around, but the couple still live in Lovell. Bil is confident that just as it did last time, the essay contest will deliver a fitting new owner for the centuries-old Inn.

He said people often asked him when he and his wife held a contest, “‘What if you get the wrong person or what if this person lies to you?’ Our answer was and is, ‘We trust.’ It was part of the magic of this whole thing. And it turned out we were right.”
