Radio Hanoi broadcasts Jimi Hendrix’s “Star Spangled Banner”

On this day in 1971, Radio Hanoi broadcasted Jimi Hendrix’s version of the “Star Spangled Banner.” Radio Hanoi was a propaganda radio station run by the North Vietnamese Army during the Vietnam War. I can’t imagine how the soldiers felt while listening to this epic song.

The studio version of Jimi’s rendition is available on the Rainbow Bridge album and Cornerstones collection. His performance of our nation’s anthem at the 1969 Woodstock Festival was among the most controversial renditions of the anthem ever.

Does ‘Adjustment Bureau’ promote predestination?

The Adjustment Bureau” opened this weekend and is already getting a lot of attention because of its theme of free will versus predestination. The movie, starring Matt Damon and Emily Blunt, is really a love story, but it forces viewers to question whether a higher power really controls what we do and decisions we make every day. adjustment bureau

In the film, “The Adjustment Bureau” are people who walk among us “adjusting” the minor details of everyday life (i.e., causing us to miss a bus, answer a phone, or run a stoplight) in order to keep us on track for the “plan” that has been written for our life. This “plan,” according to the movie, has been authored by the “Chairman,” who Christians would likely refer to as God.

In the movie, Matt Damon wants to believe he is in control of his life. He is soon confronted by the Adjustment Bureau and learns that his free will is an illusion – limited, at best – and that  deviating from the plan can have dire consequences.

I think Calvinists and free-will believers will have a heyday with this movie. Although the film muddles theology and ultimately avoids taking a clear stance on the argument, it will make you ponder the small events in life that seem inconsequential.

The movie ends by giving us hope that we can earn back free will or change God’s plan if we show that our intentions are genuine and we can be trusted with more control over our lives.

View trailer here.

Questions the movie leaves you with:

Do we really have free will, or is it limited free will?

If the “Chairman” makes all of the decisions for our lives, can we get him to change his mind? How?

Does predestination really encompass every detail of our lives, or just the major events and decisions that ultimately affect history and God’s plan?

A “bitchin and gnarly” website dedicated to Charlie Sheen

A new website has surfaced highlighting recent quotes from Two and a Half Men star Charlie Sheen. Though his addiction is no laughing matter, his statements are quite entertaining. I smell a reality show. Click here to visit “Live the Sheen Dream”

What your favorite classic rock band says about you

You know you have been into a couple of these bands before. Admit it. Well here is what John Peck says these bands say about you. Here are some of my favorites.

Jimi Hendrix: You are under 20 or over 65.

Chicago: You are incapable of talking about Chicago without mentioning their horn section.

Foreigner: You have a severely wrinkled Jane Fonda poster under your bed.

Styx: You have a severely wrinkled Foreigner poster under your bed.

Journey: You own those running shoes that are shaped like feet.

Red Hot Chili Peppers new album title isn’t that long

The Red Hot Chili Peppers have released the working title of their newest album (being finished now), and it’s a mouthful: – “Dr Johnny Skinz’s Disproportionately Rambunctious Polar Express Machine-head.”

But it’s not really THAT long.

If you want to see a really long album title, then check this. One of the longest album title that actually made the charts was by Fiona Apple (remember her?). It was titled: “When the Pawn Hits the Conflicts He Thinks Like a King What He Knows Throws the Blows When He Goes to the Fight and He’ll Win the Whole Thing ‘Fore He Enters the Ring There’s No Body to Batter When Your Mind Is Your Might So When You Go Solo, You Hold Your Own Hand and Remember That Depth Is the Greatest of Heights and If You Know Where You Stand, Then You Know Where to Land and If You Fall It Won’t Matter, Cuz You’ll Know That You’re Right.”

The album title contains 90 words and, including spaces, 446 characters. (via

Die-hard fans of Chumbawamba will of course remember their 2008 release of The Boy Bands Have Won…” which contains 865 characters and holds the record for the longest album title, as of August 2009.

Top 5 80’s (early 90’s) Rock Screamers

I am a child of the 80’s. As a Gen Xer, I grew up listening to the hard rock, hair bands, and metal of the mid-eighties through early 90’s. I debate these groups on a somewhat regular basis over beers and wings with some of my musician friends. The argument on best lead vocals usually ends in a stalemate, but we all agree that very few singers in music today do it like these guys.

Here are my picks for the 5 best 80’s (early 90’s) rock “screamers.” By “screamer,” I mean dudes who could wail like a banshee, hit notes like a chick, and still make it sound badass.  These choices are based only on vocal talent, uniqueness of sound, and to some degree their ability to hold notes for a long period of time. This is not a popularity contest, a debate on what band was cooler, or who had more hit singles.

#1 Axl Rose (Guns N’ Roses)

#2 Sebastian Bach (Skid Row)

#3 Jeff Keith (Tesla)

#4 Miljenko Matijevic (Steelheart)

#5 Michael Sweet (Stryper)

Who did I miss?

My new favorite band – Bad Rabbits

These guys aren’t new, but they are new to me. Don’t you love it when you discover a new band you like?  They say they’ve been doing this about 10 years, and since 10 years is usually when bands break, or”making it big,” you’ll likely hear their name again.

Ladies, you know you’ve been there

You’ve been at a bar and seen them. Drunk girls. Nothing better illustrates how you can sometimes look to us than by viewing this baby trash a bar in Las Palmas.  Have fun this weekend, no matter where you decide to belly up.

Bathroom graffiti fail

Saw this graffiti in the bathroom at a favorite Minneapolis restaurant of mine the other night. I love how the progression of “metal” one-upping is silenced by the baddest band of all time…Hall & Oates.
