Jim Gaffigan coming to Minneapolis Oct 2011

I was so excited to get the presale message for Jim Gaffigan tickets at the State Theater in Minnapolis this fall. For those of you who don’t know, he’ll be here 10/7 and 10/8. Buy tickets here.

Until then, enjoy this classic bit about camping from his King Baby tour.

Careless Whisper Saxophone Prank

This has been floating around for awhile, but what the hell. Check out this self described “Sexy Sax Man” hit the streets, malls, and other inappropriate locations to perform “Careless Whisper” on the saxaphone. His real name is Sergio Flores. Sounds like the name of a sax player.

The death penalty in Minnesota

Minnesota Gallows

Ann Bilansky (born Mary Ann Evards Wright) became the first and only woman hanged by the state of Minnesota on this date in 1860. She was found guilty of poisoning her husband with arsenic. One hundred people watched in close proximity while over fifteen hundred caught a glimpse through knot holes and rooftops.

Minnesota also has the dubious honor of being the state of the largest mass hanging in United States history. As a result of the Dakota Conflict, thirty-eight Native Americans were hung in Mankato, Minnesota.

In 1906 William Williams was the last person to be executed in the State of Minnesota. He was convicted of the shooting death of a St Paul teenager. At 12:31 a.m. on February 13, Williams was dropped from the make-shift gallows constructed by the sheriff. His feet hit the floor. The sheriff had not taken into account the fact that the rope would stretch eight inches and William’s neck about four and a half inches. It took three deputies hauling the rope upward to keep Williams feet off the floor while he slowly choked to death. Williams died a slow and agonizing death that took fourteen and half minutes.

Sexist retro advertising

I think we have come a long way in terms of gender equality in the U.S. If you want some proof of that, take a looksie at the sexism in these vintage advertisments. (via)

Zombies Ahead

zombies ahead

Photos by Jeff Sochko: Road signs on S.C. 160 spread strange messages Sunday. How the signs got changed is unknown.

In South Carolina this past weekend, an electronic road sign warned motorists of “Zombies Ahead,” among other messages. Since you have to physically be at the sign with a key to change the message, the DOT in SC aren’t sure who did it. I’m thinking it was an inside job, but lets be honest, it could have been zombies. Read more about the prank here.

The Rules of Calling Shotgun

Shotgun Rules
I’m not sure how long youth have been “calling shotgun” with their friends before heading off in a car somewhere. I remember it well with my group of friends growing up. “Calling shotgun” usually turned into a gigantic argument that could delay a departure for 10 minutes or more.

I doubt that happens much anymore. Now, there is a website that outlines the rules of calling shotgun. I wish I would have had a resource like this as a teenager.

The term “shotgun” refers to the front passenger seat of an automobile. “Calling shotgun” is the act of claiming the position of shotgun for one’s self. The rules are located here and cover things like:

When shotgun can be called
Can shotgun be called indoors?
The Re-Entry Rule
The Line-Of-Sight Rule
What is “The Balk”
What if my hand is on the door?
How to handle garages
The Shotgun Gaper and how to deal with one

There are a ton more, and this site covers every possible scenario. Enjoy, bookmark, and share with your friends.

Inside a new Al Qaeda magazine for Muslim women

Al-Shamikha magazine

Al-Shamikha magazine

Don’t say they’ve never done anything for you ladies. Al Qaeda has a new magazine on the stands just for women. Al-Shamikha offers women tips on things like skin care, etiquette, niqab wearing, and marriage. Oh, and they also provide some essential advice on jihad and martyrdom.

The magazine cover shows a fully covered Muslim woman and a picture of a machine gun. Just like Cosmopolitan magazine has a “Fun, Fearless Female” award, Al-Shamikha honors the women it admires, too.  Except these women are the wives of martyrs who have blown themselves up to kill infidels.

But as we all have heard, Islam is a peaceful religion.

Sammy Hagar insists he was abducted by aliens

Hagar insists he was abducted by aliens. I think it could have been the Tequila talking.

During an interview about his new book “Red: My Uncensored Life in Rock”, Sammy Hagar said he’d been abducted by aliens. Read the full article here. I have had his brand of Tequila before and I also thought I had been abducted by aliens. As it turns out, I had just been arrested. Kidding.

Here are some other stars who claim alien encounters.

  • Japan’s first lady, Miyuki Hatoyama
  • Jackie Gleason
  • William Shatner
  • Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter
  • Ronald Reagan
  • John Lennon
  • Mick Jagger

The only known TIME Magazine cover typo

Here are some pictures of the only known typo to appear on the cover of TIME Magazine. It was published on this day in 1983. The typo appears in the upper right corner and shows a spelling of the word “control” as “contol.” All magazines were recalled, but some are still out there. These pictures come from an eBay listing I found.
