Perfectly horrible placement for a cruise ship ad

Unfortunate Juxtaposition spotted in today’s edition of the Swedish daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter, a full-page ad promoting cruise line packages just to the right of a full-page article about the Costa Concordia disaster.

Newspaper layout people should know better than this when a disaster has occurred.

Unfortunate Juxtaposition

Six dead, 16 missing is the latest count in the Costa Concordia disaster. A couple from Minnesota are among the missing.

2012 radio changes for the Twin Cities

New changes to the Minnesota airwaves have recently been announced. Update your presets accordingly.
WLTE 102.9 Minneapolis102.9 is now a Country station. I guess Love 105 will have to provide the fix you need for the sappy stuff.

B-96.3 Hip-hop is now a new “adult” Top 40 station still playing some old cuts. Recent news says it will be less “teeny bopper” and host a bit more of a talk element.
Tony Fly and Perk from Channel 11 will be doing a morning show I guess.

So what do you think of the changes?

Here is the station I miss the most.

Behind-the-Scenes: Your Bag’s Journey On Delta

Cool video from the POV of a checked bag on a Delta flight. Watch the journey here. Pretty fascinating behind-the-scenes look at how the process works.

St. Paul kid with bo stick

Old video of 8-year-old martial artist and future actor Wayne Dalgish’s bo stick performance will impress and scare you at the same time. He is from St. Paul, MN by the way. I would not want to get in a fight with this kid a billiard hall.

Videos from the Mall of America melee

Yesterday a bunch of feral youth took to the MOA in Bloomington, MN to cause trouble. They succeeded. More than 200 young people started to brawl (for reasons not yet known) in a food court and quickly spread through the mall. Witnesses reported seeing some of these idiots pulling guns and some of the mob grabbed items from shoppers and kiosks.

The MOA of course is trying to downplay this incident in hopes of not worrying shoppers about mall safety. There are other reasons the Mall is being delicate with this story too, but I won’t get into that now.

I think that Mall is one of the worst things to happen to this state.

Here are some eyewitness videos of the melee posted to YouTube in the last 24 hours. Would you feel safe shopping there?

Joe Mauer’s wedding gift registry

Maddie Bisanz

Source: Larry Brown Sports is 99% sure this is Maddie in the picture above.

Joe Mauer got engaged over the weekend, and rumor has it that he tore several ligaments when he got down on one knee to propose. The Twins catcher, proposed to fellow Cretin-Derham Hall graduate Maddie Bisanz who is a nurse, so I’m sure he’s in good hands.

So what do you get a baseball player with a $184 million contract? Here are some things that might be on his gift registry.

  • A pair of gold-plated crutches
  • Bilateral leg weakness cream
  • Clairol sideburn hair color
  • A diamond encrusted Medical ID Alert Bracelet
  • Drew Butera (to walk down the isle on the big day if Mauer isn’t 100% after the rehearsal dinner)
  • Steroid infused wedding cake
  • Abbott & Costello’s Who’s on First DVD
  • A wedding band designed to look like a World Series Ring
  • The classic game “Operation” by Hasbro
  • A “get well soon card”
  • A travel sized x-ray machine

All kidding aside, Minnesotans are happy for you Joe. Hope you can make it past first base on your wedding night.

Shop Twins and Mauer gear here.

What else do you think is on his registry?

Jamey Carroll to be Twins new SS

Jamey Carroll to be Twins new SS
Carroll is close to signing a multiyear deal with the Twins according to preliminary reports from Baseball America writer Jerry Crasnick, and would be their everyday shortstop.

Carroll, who will be 38 in February, is coming off a two-year, $3.85-million contract with the Dodgers. Due to team injuries, he played more like a starter, batting .290 in 803 at-bats during his two seasons with the Dodgers.

Fun fact: Jamey Carroll has had a higher on-base percentage than Michael Cuddyer in each of the past four seasons.

If it’s a good price, then I am fine with it. The multiyear deal thing does make me nervous on a guy at his age though. More to come.

Bill Smith gets his walking papers

Terry Ryan is returning to the role of Twins GM, the team announced today. Ryan, who has an interim tag on his title this time, replaces Bill Smith. Said owner Jim Pohlad in a statement:

Here is a timeline of terrible moves made by Mr. Smith. Welcome back Terry Ryan. These trades reposted from smithysports.

2007
November 28th – Twins trade starting pitcher Matt Garza , starting shortstop Jason Bartlett and some no name minor league pitcher who has yet to make it to the Big Leagues for Outfielder Delmon Young and in-fielder Brendan Harris.

2008
January 29th – Trade starting pitcher and Cy Young award winning to the Mets for Center Fielder Carlos Gomez and a bunch of no name prospects that are closer to making the Big leagues than Paris Hilton is to practicing abstinence. This is one of the worst trades ever, especially when you consider the Twins could have traded Johan to the Red Sox for Jacoby Ellsburry and some prospects. Bill Smith should be getting more flak for this move than Kahn has for any of his moves
February 12th – Signed Livan Hernandez to a one year deal. This was the first of many moves by Smith making us a team that gets knocked out of the first round.
December 11th – agreed to terms with Nick Punto on a two-year club option.

2009
July 31st – Get Orlando Cabrera for less than half season to make the playoffs and then quickly get ousted in the first round again. We then let him go.
August 28th – traded pitcher Phil Humber for Jon Rauch.
November 6th – traded CF Carlos Gomez to Brewers for SS JJ Hardy, who due to injuries in his first season with the Twins, understandably, played poorly. So what do we do? Get rid and let him go to Orioles where he now has 23 Home runs and batting average of .270. Really Bill Smith?

2010
July 29th – We trade catcher Wilson Ramos for closer Matt Capps.
December 17th – Signed Japanese baseball player Tsuyoshi Nishioka to a three-year contract worth 10 million dollars. But when you consider the Twins paid Nishioka 5 million dollars just to negotiate with they are ending up paying this guy 15 million dollars.

2011
August 15th – Twins trade Delmon Young to the Tigers for two no name, no good minor league pitchers.
