Kurt Cobain – The Reluctant Rock Star

Kurt Cobain

Where were you when Elvis died? Where were you when you heard that JFK was shot? Every generation has their own pop culture tragedies that affect them in personal ways. Gen-xers are no different and experienced their own shock when they heard that Kurt Cobain committed suicide on April 5, 1994.

I was driving southbound across the Cedar Avenue bridge when I heard the news on the local rock station here in the Twin Cities. I was never a gigantic Nirvana fan from the onset, but the news hit me hard just the same. I was part of that older Gen-X segment that mostly grew up with the hair and metal bands of the ’80s. Many of us viewed Nirvana and the grunge movement as an assault to the technical proficiency and song writing we were used to in rock music.

We didn’t think it would last. Boy, were we wrong.

I appreciate Nirvana and what they brought to music now more as an adult. Sometimes, it’s hard to see the profoundness of history being made while you are living it.

Kurt Cobain was always known as the “reluctant rock star.” I disagree with that assessment. I believe Kurt was pretty selfish and knew what he was doing all along. Read between the lines of his suicide note if you want evidence of that. Stardom didn’t drive him to suicide; mental illness and drugs did. Let’s not forget that.

10 interesting facts about Kurt Cobain:

  • Cobain was prescribed the drug Ritalin to treat his hyper-activity as a child.
  • On his 14th birthday, his Uncle Chuck gives him a choice between a bicycle and an electric guitar as a gift. Cobain chooses the latter and receives some lessons from his uncle’s band mates.
  • As a child, Cobain had an imaginary childhood friend named Boddah.
  • Kurt joined the wrestling team in junior high school, the local baseball team while in high school, and took the entrance exams to join the Navy (which he passed).
  • Before Nirvana, Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic played in a band together called Stiff Woodie.
  • Cobain suffered from chronic stomach and back pains most of his life.
  • Nirvana played their last concert in Munich on March 24, 1994.
  • Kurt dropped out of school to get a job and ended up a roadie for The Melvins, who ultimately introduced Cobain to Dave Grohl.
  • He had been listening to R.E.M.‘s album, Automatic for the People, before taking his own life.
  • There was a family history of suicide. Two of Cobain’s uncles committed suicide with guns.

Four really good LEGO ads

Here is a well-executed print campaign for LEGO. These four ads beautifully convey the power of a child’s imagination. Will all of the technology and gadgets we have today, none of them can compare to what the mind can create. I hope we never lose toys like LEGO.

What hand wins a T1000 poker tournament?

I played in my first T1000 Texas Hold’em tournament this past weekend. Between 10 guys, I placed 3rd. I was happy with my playing, and I’d love to do it again sometime. The first guy didn’t get knocked out for over three hours. As the blinds started doubling though, people were dropping like flies. This is the hand that won it all after about five hours of play.

Clear the area. Something is about to go down.

What do you think of when you see this? I’m thinking about a Beastie Boys video starring the Blues Brothers in their younger years. I’m also thinking the FBI might be recruiting a bit too young. Whatever you see, I’m sure it’s trouble.

R.I.P. Porky’s – Closing on Sunday

Source: Mark Kolkmann

I was very sad to hear the news about Porky’s in St. Paul closing it’s doors. The neighborhood drive-in rode the crusin’ craze of the 1950’s in St. Paul and was  a place to show off your classic car while eating famous onion rings. Everyone who lives in Minnesota has a story about this place.

Even though the owners said business was good, the tax hikes and newly planned construction of the Central Corridor light-rail line were factors in closing.

Porky’s will close their doors this Sunday. Thanks a lot light-rail people. I hope your happy.

What will you miss about Porky’s?

Muppet Theatre Backstage Playset

Lance Cardinal is a big Muppet fan. He is also a student at the Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver, and a freelance set designer.

Nine years ago, Palisades Toys started releasing high-quality Muppet Show action figures. Lance bought 82 characters and all the playsets, including Swedish Chef’s kitchen and the Electric Mayhem concert stage.  But before Palisades could release a Muppet Theatre Backstage Playset to hold all the characters, the company went out of business.

Sad about not having this last set piece, he decided to make his own. The result is stunning and beautiful. You can view it here on his website.

Record northern pike story lives on

There is no shortage of fish tales circulating the internet. Some last for years thanks for people like my Dad who, innocently enough, take things at face value. Other fishing resorts and guide services claim these stories as their own to bring in business. If it’s on the internet, it must be true right?

The truth is most sportsmen WANT to believe this stuff. If you hunt for fish, you have had dreams of the trophy buck or the record pike. I had a dream once that I caught a 5 lb black crappie in 3 feet of water.

The story of the record northern pike caught in Turtle Lake outside of Saskatchewan landed in my inbox again this morning. The fish pictured has been “caught” in Canada, the U.S.A., and the Baltic. The story varies a bit each time, but usually involves a guy who is landing a smaller pike only to have this monster hit it. The story ends with the fisherman landing both of them in the same net.

The story even got picked up by the Angling Times in 2007.

Angling Times featured record northern pike in 2007

The most accurate story I can tell you is that the pike was actually caught in Holland by Ewout Blom. The Pike Anglers Club of Great Britian secured Ewout’s story for issue 117 of Pikelines.

As far as I know, the mystery stops here. Or does it?
