Marketing and advertising news and tactics that caught my eye.

I’m into nuggets y’all

We all know about companies leveraging YouTube to get in front of their customers again. This couldn’t be truer with brands that are targeting youth. Marketers know that success has been made creating a genuine word-of-mouth dialogue about brands through user-generated content. Those who get it understand that it is a short-lived, but powerful tool. Many will take a stab at it and fail miserably. Some will get lucky … like McDonald’s did this summer with these two tools. However, some people think “it’s the most annoying commercial ever” and insinuate that it isn’t “quality” content.

What naysayers don’t understand is that this UGC spot wasn’t created for adults or for people who take advertising too seriously. It was created for teenagers who eat fast food a hundred times a week. It was created to be entertaining. McDonald’s is doing the smart thing by using it on for its TV spot without altering it and or polishing it up for television. I saw it this morning at about 6:30 at a time when students are sure to be getting ready for school. It’s not genius; it’s just good strategy.

BudTV Swear Jar Commercial

Despite what is being said about BudTV, they did something right with this spot. Get ready to laugh your F&*$^#! ass off.

Make the logo bigger

Make the LOGO BIGGER

If you work in the advertising or design world, then you may have had the opportunity to work clients that insist that bigger is better, or that a print ad can be designed in Word, or that their image are hi-res.  A song called Make the logo bigger is a metal song by Burn Back has been written for you. It will melt your face and your designer soul.

A dry crack is a happy crack

The Crack Team

A dry crack is a happy crack? I'll say...

Okay, let me first start out by saying, “I agree.” With that being said, is this really the tagline you want for your company? I’m not sure how this copy is working for them, but if you have crack issues, click here or www.thecrackteam.com and tell them you have a wet crack. I’d be curious to hear their response.

Ronald McDonald with a LEGO boner

Ronald McDonald

I think it’s great that McDonald’s has cool stuff for kids to play with so Mom and Dad can finish arguing about wallpaper. The ball crawl, the Hamburglar slide, and LEGOs for the kids to (ahem) build with.

Some teenagers had some fun with this life-size plastic Ronald McDonald statue sitting on a bench in the McDonald’s by my house. I still appreciate juvenile humor, so I couldn’t help but laugh.

LowerMyBills.com banner ads are slowly killing me

LowerMyBills.com

Okay, so when I first saw this banner ad, I was slightly amused because the little cowboys were dancing in rhythm to the Tupac song that was coming from my PC. But after I had viewed this banner 2 gazillion times and multiple and equally crappy versions of it, I wanted to drop-kick someone. Seriously, I can’t let it go. I think they are shaving days off my life.

According to national news and blogs everywhere, the LoweMyBills.com ads are loathed by people everywhere, yet we are still clicking away on them. The company, one of the largest internet advertisers out there, crapped on the internet with $74 million dollars worth of ads in 2006 (according to TNS Media Intelligence), and they don’t appear to be slowing down.

Annoying advertising isn’t going away unless we stop responding to it. The guys at LowerMyBills.com are laughing their way to the bank, and they didn’t have to hire an ad agency to do it. Simply put, simple repetition and saturation will generate leads, but is it worth people hating you? I guess it is. Experian paid nearly $400 million to buy the company in 2005…

And a word of caution to you web marketers: Don’t try to steal their creative. NextTag got bitch-slapped in court to the tune of $200,000 for their fancy Photoshop work.

This family-owned coffee shop has been in business since the 1970s and its success hasn’t come through sheer luck. With a 100 year old roaster in the front window, you can smell the roasted beans. They sell coffee and tea varieties from more than 65 countries, including Rwanda and the Galapagos. They have succeeded by being passionate about coffee. If you are looking for a selection of coffee you can brew yourself, look no further than Coffee & Tea Ltd. in SW Minneapolis.

If you are searching for an example of creating a remarkable small business niche, look no further than Fluffy’s litter box. If you are really having a tough morning, maybe you should pour yourself a cup of Kopi Luwak. It’s made from red beans that have been eaten and pooped out by the Civet Cat from Indonesia. And while you might have to pay me to drink this stuff, Edina housewives are shelling out $420 per pound for this stuff at Coffee & Tea Ltd.
