The first and most important thing that you need to understand when creating your own cigar pairing it is completely subjective to the individual. Everyone’s tastes are a little different from one another. This means you want to make sure that you are trying cigars that have different strengths, tobaccos and wrappers to continue to expand your palate. It is great to have a so called “go-to cigar” but don’t be afraid to try something new, that is what makes the pairing experience so enjoyable.

When you are considering a paring you want try to strengthen the dominant flavors, yet also trying to amplify the hidden flavors that may be produced from the pairing. All the while trying to making sure you are enjoying both parts of the pairing. The easiest way to accomplish this is to start by gathering a little information about the cigar and whatever you decide is the other half of the pairing. You will want to find some tasting notes, product strengths, flavors, maybe even ingredients. Pairing the strength of a cigar with the strength of an alcoholic drink, is a fairly easy way to start when you are considering a pairing.

For example a cigar and beer pairing is the classic Arturo Fuente 858 cigar with a Wit or wheat beer. The Claro leaf used on this cigar allows for a smooth, mellow, medium strength cigar. Which will match great with a Belgian-style wheat beer, which has a medium body yet usually includes some additional flavor notes like fruit.

Now that you got the basics, get a couple friends or family members together and try to create your own flavor pairings. Whatever you do just remember you are doing this to create an enjoyable experience, so have fun with it!
