Everyone should carry a Winter Survival Kit in their car. In an emergency, it could save your life and the lives of your passengers. Here’s a few ideas for what to include
Store necessary items in passenger compartment as your trunk may become stuck or frozen:
- Car utility shovel
- Windshield scraper and small broom
- Flashlight with extra batteries (Reverse batteries until needed)
- Battery powered or self powered radio
- Water
- Snack food including energy bars
- Raisins and mini candy bars
- Canned meat/soup and can opener
- Matches and small candles (two lighters – 1=None)
- Package all dry items in plastic bags. The bags can be used for a lot of things (Newspaper plastic bags can be used to insulate socks/mittens) extra hats, socks and mittens
- First aid kit with pocket knife
- Large plastic garbage bag
- Safety pins
- Pencil & paper. Ink freezes. Your knife can be used to sharpen pencil. Always leave a note/info if you have to leave your vehicle
- Rope/string can be used for many things. (Most of which you’ll never think of till stranded)
- Necessary medications
- Blankets or sleeping bag
- tow chain or rope
- Road salt, sand, or cat litter for traction
- Booster/jumper cables
- Emergency Flares
- Cell phone adapter to plug into lighter
