That’s what makes photos like this so touching. We know that they might not have seen their men for two years or more. If they got a telegram, they probably didn’t want to open it. Fear of the unknown could become palpable in mere seconds.

Right! And they didn’t have the technology to stay in touch like we do today. Goodbye was goodbye for a long time…
