Kidnapped for Christ

Kidnapped for Christ follows the stories of several American teenagers who were sent to Escuela Caribe, an American-run Evangelical Christian “reform school” in The Dominican Republic. Many of them are taken from their homes against their will and shipped off there to live and correct bad behavior.

Worst Church Singer Ever

Singing is NOT one of this guys spiritual gifts. Find out for yourself starting at about the 1:00 mark. I am pretty sure the angels and Jesus wept, but God bless him anyway.

A survey of American Protestant pastors

earth

America’s Protestant pastors overwhelmingly reject the theory of evolution and are evenly split on whether the earth is 6,000 years old, according to a survey released Monday by the Southern Baptist Convention.

When asked if “God used evolution to create people,” 73% of pastors disagreed – 64% said they strongly disagreed – compared to 12% who said they agree.

Asked whether the earth is approximately 6,000 years old, 46% agreed, compared to 43% who disagreed.

A movement called Young Earth creationism promotes the 6,000-year-old figure, arguing that it is rooted in the Bible. Scientists say the earth is about 4.5 billion years old.

The Southern Baptist Convention survey, which queried 1,000 American Protestant pastors, also found that 74% believe the biblical Adam and Eve were literal people.

The Day Metallica Came to Church

John Van Sloten is a pastor at New Hope Church in Calgary.

John Van Sloten is a pastor at New Hope Church in Calgary.

What does the music of Metallica have to do with God? According to author and pastor John Van Sloten, a lot. God can speak through their music – if we’re listening, he says. Van Sloten has built a church around the band’s music and lyrics and shows us first hand how God uses many things (including heavy metal music) to call his children home. In fact, Van Sloten shows how God can speak to us through anything and everything – heavy metal music, R-rated films, sports, and even the latest fashions. If you’re listening, his book The Day Metallica Came to Church might just change the way you hear God’s voice – and how you live in today’s world.

The Minister’s Treehouse

One day in 1993, Horace Burgess, a minister in Crossville, TN, received a message from God that if he built Him a treehouse, he would never run out of materials.

So Burgess started building a treehouse out of salvaged wood, and after twenty years, it stands ten stories tall. The treehouse is built around seven trees that act as supports. Burgess worked on it as he found materials, stopping and starting as supplies or time allowed. All in, he has spent about $12,000 on it.

If you get raptured, what happens to your pets?

Nearly 40 million people in the U.S. believe there will be a Second Coming in their lifetime, followed by the Rapture. It is said that during this time, the righteous will be spirited away to a better place while the unbelievers remain on Earth. Since the Bible isn’t clear on what happens to our furry little friends, you can now at least have peace of mind that they can be cared for. That is, if you don’t mind they are looked after by (gasp!) atheists.

This is not a joke. An organization exists that recruits non-Christian animal lovers nationwide to volunteer to take care of left-behind pets if the Rapture occurs. You pay a $10 monthly fee to keep your membership and register all your pets.

Geez, I hope they’ll take an unpredictable Ferret with a bad disposition.

Does ‘Adjustment Bureau’ promote predestination?

The Adjustment Bureau” opened this weekend and is already getting a lot of attention because of its theme of free will versus predestination. The movie, starring Matt Damon and Emily Blunt, is really a love story, but it forces viewers to question whether a higher power really controls what we do and decisions we make every day. adjustment bureau

In the film, “The Adjustment Bureau” are people who walk among us “adjusting” the minor details of everyday life (i.e., causing us to miss a bus, answer a phone, or run a stoplight) in order to keep us on track for the “plan” that has been written for our life. This “plan,” according to the movie, has been authored by the “Chairman,” who Christians would likely refer to as God.

In the movie, Matt Damon wants to believe he is in control of his life. He is soon confronted by the Adjustment Bureau and learns that his free will is an illusion – limited, at best – and that  deviating from the plan can have dire consequences.

I think Calvinists and free-will believers will have a heyday with this movie. Although the film muddles theology and ultimately avoids taking a clear stance on the argument, it will make you ponder the small events in life that seem inconsequential.

The movie ends by giving us hope that we can earn back free will or change God’s plan if we show that our intentions are genuine and we can be trusted with more control over our lives.

View trailer here.

Questions the movie leaves you with:

Do we really have free will, or is it limited free will?

If the “Chairman” makes all of the decisions for our lives, can we get him to change his mind? How?

Does predestination really encompass every detail of our lives, or just the major events and decisions that ultimately affect history and God’s plan?
